Mother’s Day is coming.
You’d love to address an envelope to Mom with beautiful calligraphy. There’s just one problem. How do you use those brush pens anyway?
I’ve got you covered. Keep reading to download your free traceable.
Supplies Needed:
- Tombow Fudenosuke, Pentel Sign Pen or Zebra Fude
- Smooth paper (remember, rough paper will fray the edges of your pen)
- Lightpad or window
- Traceable
Step 1. Warm-up
Whenever you start any calligraphy project, it’s important to warm up. Even if it’s a line or two of a the basic strokes, it will help you prepare to write.
Also, get used to the pressure of your brush pen. Make thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes with your pen. Tip: Angle your brush pen so it’s about a 45-degree angle to the paper, not straight up and down. See the pictures below.
2. Print the Traceable on smooth paper.
For the best use of your brush pens, make sure you’re using smooth paper, like HP 32 lb Premium Paper. Because brush pens are flexible, paper that is rough will slowly (and consistently) shred the brush tip.
3. Trace the letters and words.
Remember to go slowly and use the basic strokes, always using thick strokes on the downstrokes and thin strokes on the upstrokes.
Mom is made up of just three strokes: an overturn, a compound curve, and an oval. If you know these three strokes, you can write Mom with a little practice on your pressure. The traceable will give you a guide to connecting the letters too.
Optional: Use a lightbox to trace the calligraphy onto a card, envelope, or another piece of paper.
Whether you’re addressing an envelope or wanting to create a special card for Mom, I hope this traceable will get you started.
And, Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s out there! Enjoy your special day.
